ICA Talk: Tony Cokes
An evening of video and sound experiments by artist Tony Cokes. Many of Cokes’ works evoke a sentiment best described by the artist when he claimed “blackness is not an essence, but a hack, a method, a technological intervention under construction (and also under often dire social pressures) being coded, or played into existence daily.”
An alumnus of VCUarts, Cokes participated in the ICA’s exhibition, Great Force. His video and multimedia installation works have been included in exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Guggenheim Museum Soho; The New Museum; The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and Documenta X, Germany. Recent solo exhibitions and screenings have taken place at REDCAT, the Gene Siskel Film Center, and Greene Naftali Gallery. Cokes is professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University.
