Artist Cauleen Smith navigates four distinct universes that embody sites of historical speculation and radical generosity between artist and community. Join Awendela Grantham for a dialogue about racial formations in Smith’s work through the lens of Grantham’s book, The Africana Experience: We’ve Come This Far.

Dr. Awendela Grantham is an assistant professor in the African American Studies Department at VCU. She researches how political and religious movements influence identity in black women, civic leaders, and mixed-race individuals. She holds a B.A. from Yale University in French and International Studies, and a M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale, each dual majors in French and African American Studies.
