Visitor Policies

To ensure the most enjoyable experience for all ICA visitors, we kindly ask you to observe the following guidelines:

Visitor experience/safety
Although we encourage you to engage with the art, please do not make physical contact with any objects, display cases, or pedestals. Remaining at least an arm’s length away from any work of art is strongly suggested.

Also, please be respectful of your fellow visitors. Running and yelling can be really distracting, and so can cell phone conversations. Please silence your phone and take calls outside of gallery spaces. For audio tours, earbuds are  provided at the Visitor Services Desk.

All children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Unless otherwise noted, non-flash photography and video for personal, non-commercial use is permitted in the ICA. No tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, drones, or large recording equipment may be used. Also – please, share your images with us! #icavcu

If you’re going to sketch at the ICA, you can only do it with a pencil, unless otherwise noted or special permission has been granted. Sketchpads must not exceed 11” x 17”.

Groups of 10 or more should make advanced reservations. Check back soon for details.

Food + Drink
Food and Drink (including candy, gum, etc.) are not permitted in the galleries. Please visit our café if you’re hungry.

Only service animals will be allowed to enter the building. Leashes are required at all times.

Coat Check
We encourage you to leave your personal belongings at home or in your vehicle. No umbrellas, skateboards, or any item exceeding 16” x 13” x 9” (backpacks, purses, briefcases, etc.) are permitted in the galleries. A coat check area is available in the museum’s lower level, but due to the limited amount of space, available storage lockers are not guaranteed. The ICA is not responsible for stolen or damaged personal property left in the area.

A small off-street lot is available directly behind the ICA, and there’s on-street parking options on the surrounding blocks. Check back for details closer to our opening date.

The ICA firmly believes in art for everyone. And we’ve designed our space and our programs to be accessible to all. As a part of VCU, we’re in lock step with the university’s policies on access, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA), ADA Standards for Accessible Design, and Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
