Gospel music from Richmond’s historic First African Baptist Church
Founded in 1841, the historic First African Baptist Church has been a center of cultural and spiritual life in Richmond for over 150 years. Today their music and arts ministries comprise an orchestra, drama and dance programs, and several choirs. The Contemporary Choir was formed at the request of Senior Pastor Dr. Rodney Waller in 2013 to expand the church’s music repertoire. Under the leadership of Michelle Lightfoot, the 25+ member Contemporary Choir has performed at 2nd Street Festival, The Maggie Walker Museum, Brown’s Island, and many other venues.
