Provocations Performance: Poetry Out Loud/Teens with a Purpose
March 15, 4:00 pm // March 16, 3:00 pm
Youth poetry programs
Poetry Out Loud is a free, national recitation competition for high school students. On Friday, fifteen students from across the Commonwealth will perform classical and contemporary works alongside Grammy-nominated progressive hip-hop artist and multi-instrumentalist Christylez Bacon. Christylez, playing instruments such as the West African djembe drum, acoustic guitar, and the human beat-box, will create a unique counterbalance to student recitations selected from the Poetry Out Loud anthology.
Teens with a Purpose is a non-profit organization that empowers young people to use their voice and creativity to affect personal growth, transform lives, and impact their communities. On Saturday, they will present “Balance & Struggle”, an original performance of poetry, music and movement in conversation with Rashid Johnson’s “Monument” installation.
