Broad Signals

Broad Signals

The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University presents Broad Signals, a new, ongoing public art commissioning series dedicated to engaging internationally renowned artists in creating original large-scale works for the exterior of the Markel Center.

Transforming the intersection of Broad and Belvidere Streets into a dynamic site for artistic production and community engagement, the series encompasses a range of scales and approaches. Monumental projects serve as visual beacons within the urban landscape, while smaller interventions create contemplative environments that invite close looking and moments of reflection for visitors and pedestrians moving through the VCU campus and neighborhood.

Artists selected for Broad Signals are charged with responding to the ICA’s architecture, its civic location, and the broader cultural landscape of Richmond. The program welcomes a wide range of visual forms, including sculptural interventions, reflective or light-based works, sound, and mixed media systems. Each project considers how art can inhabit, extend, or otherwise transform the museum’s environment.

The inaugural phase of Broad Signals brings together a group of internationally recognized artists whose practices engage architecture, perception, and the social dimensions of public space. Broad Signals debuts this spring with Studio Ossidiana’s Pond Theater, slated to open in May.
