Friday, Jun 17

6:00 PM–7:30 PM

Join us for an exploration of Black collage—the medium, material, and process—with independent curator and writer Teri Henderson and graphic designer, curator, and writer Justin Smith.

Teri Henderson (she/her) is the Arts and Culture Editor of Baltimore Beat. She is the author of the 2021 book Black Collagists, a survey of over 50 Black contemporary collage artists. Previously, she was a staff writer for BmoreArt, gallery coordinator for Connect + Collect, and served as the Art Law Clinic Director for Maryland Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts. Her written work has been seen in: BmoreArt, All SHE Makes, Artforum, Justsmile Magazine, Kinfolk Travel, and the St. James Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Culture.

Justin Smith is a graphic designer, curator, and writer. He is the founder and curator of Afrovisualism, his brand, platform and practice on black visual culture. He coined and theorized Black Aesthetic Continual theory as a way to establish his Afrovisualist language and realm of thought that contextualizes the advancement of Black expression and black aesthetics. Justin describes his Afrovisualist research practice as “crate digging”, an immersive sampling process in the creation and development of visual essays, collages, and moodboards.
