Professional Development for Artists: Strategic Planning

Saturday, Nov 23

1:00 PM–3:00 PM

How do you visualize the course of your future as an artist or creative? How can you use your skills to support your practice? How do you price your work, your time, and your abilities? This seminar will help you get where you want to be by encouraging you to set personal goals, to take inventory of your skills, and to view money as less of a reward and more of a tool. Participants will consider the value and drawbacks of their own procrastination. This seminar will appeal to those who are curious about taking their creativity to a new level by marketing and selling for a modest side income. Participants will leave the seminar with an individualized action plan based on their goals.

About the Professional Development for Artists workshops:
Many artists have not had the opportunity to gain the knowledge and strategies needed to move their careers forward. These free workshops offer that to all artists and creatives in all fields, across VCU and beyond. The series, this fall, provides instruction and guidance on how to secure grants and fellowships, how to get and use artist residencies, and how to promote yourself as an artist. It will continue in the New Year with workshops on how to collaborate with art institutions, how to get public art commissions, how to engage with communities, and concludes with how to create a strategic plan for your career. The seminars are designed and led by award-winning artist Paul Rucker, who draws upon his real-life experience securing funding, fellowships, residencies and other opportunities over the course of his career. Over the course of the series, Rucker will occasionally be joined by guest artists, from various fields, who will bring their perspectives.

All workshops are free and open to the public!
