As a part of the Shockoe Institute Presents Series, The Shockoe Institute is partnering with the Institute for Contemporary Art for a new performance series, curated and hosted by Founding Artistic Director Leyla McCalla. The first event, Imagining Solidarity: Afro-Indigenous Futures and Perspectives, takes place at the ICA on Thursday, November 20, at 7 p.m. and will feature some truly inspiring musicians, including Black, Chickamauga, Choctaw, and Cherokee singer-songwriter Martha Redbone, cross-genre First Nation Odanak musician Mali Obomsawin and Tuscarora singer-songwriter Charly Lowry. This powerful conversation will be moderated by Dr. Tiffany Lethabo King. In advance of the Shockoe Institute’s official opening in April 2026, this new series brings together artists whose work resonates with the themes of its permanent exhibit Expanding Freedom, currently under construction at Main Street Station in downtown Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with a cash bar, performance starts qt 7 p.m.
