Summer Sessions: Public Domain
Jul 16, 2019 – Jul 21, 2019
This week we move from physical space to the digital realm. These less tangible forms of public domain offer a particular kind of commons. In our current moment, digital spaces are notoriously used to divide and fracture, or to seduce and monetize. We seek instead to reclaim their potential as spaces of meaningful sharing, action, and connection.
How can digital spaces become spaces of assembly, of political or social organization, or of mutual support? What are the spaces of overlap between the digital and the physical worlds, and how can they be used to create new forms of commonwealth? What could we learn by thinking about the public domain in relation to common wealth and common debts? How are these issues being explored by artists, designers, activists, and local organizations?
Facilitators: Rebecca Keel + Stephanie Smith
Session leaders include Free Egunfemi (UntoldRVA, Richmond), Patton Hindle (Kickstarter, New York), and Kate Sicchio (VCU, Richmond).
