The Intersection: A Night of Music and Storytelling With Michigander and No BS! Brass Band

The Intersection: A Night of Music and Storytelling With Michigander and No BS! Brass Band

Friday, Jul 11

6:45 PM–9:00 PM

RSVP

For the second installment of Intersection, the ICA, Overcoast Music + Sound, and Spang TV have partnered to invite indie-rock musician and songwriter Jason Singer (known as Michigander) to collaborate with the Richmond-based No BS! Brass to record novel arrangements of his songs. While Michigander’s catchy hooks and arena-ready arrangements have already gained broad appeal, on this special evening, they are matched by jazzy trumpet and tuba, lending an exciting new tenor to his sound.

Audience members will be part of a live studio audience. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the performance starting at 7 p.m. We kindly request that all audience members be seated by 6:45 p.m. Late admission will then occur twenty minutes into the performance, during the intermission.

A partnership between the ICA at VCU, Overcoast Music + Sound, and Spang TV, Intersection is a live taped music series recorded in front of an audience at the intersection of Broad and Belvidere streets in Richmond, Virginia. Each event pairs a nationally touring artist with a Virginia-based ensemble, combining sonically distinct bands for a one-time performance of a never-before-heard sound.

About the Artists:
Michigander
The last decade has seen musician Jason Singer, a.k.a. Michigander, emerge as a twenty-first-century troubadour whose balance of rock energy and heart-on-his-sleeve songcraft continues to endear him to audiences and tastemakers alike. Born in Michigan and based in Nashville, the singer, songwriter, and producer has steadily progressed one gig and release at a time, performing in festivals such as Lollapalooza and tallying over 100 million streams across his multiple releases since 2018. NPR applauded, “It’s impossible not to root for Singer, whose mix of optimism and vulnerability in his music has been one of indie rock’s most exciting stories in the last few years.”

No BS! Brass
NO BS! Brass is a powerhouse brass band from Richmond, Virginia, redefining modern brass music with explosive energy and bold, genre-defying sound. Cofounded by Reggie Pace and Lance Koehler, this dynamic ensemble has captivated audiences with a fusion of jazz, funk, rock, and hip-hop, delivered with unmistakable Southern swag. They’ve performed at the NPR Tiny Desk, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Fest and more, showcasing their “blasting brass funk” and electrifying delivery.
