For ICA architect Steven Holl, drawing is a form of thought. Almost 40 years ago he switched to 5″ x 7” watercolors, a format that is easier to travel with and enables him to quickly “shape a volume, cast a shadow, [and] indicate the direction of the sun.”

Join us on second Saturdays for a unique opportunity to explore the architecture of the Markel Center with ICA Director of Facilities, Installation, and Exhibition Design. After the tour, artist Aimee Joyaux will lead an open watercolor activity.

Michael Lease oversaw the development of crucial security and facilities protocols in preparation for the ICA opening in April 2018, and oversaw the completion of the Markel Center and the installation of the ICA’s inaugural exhibition, Declaration. Before joining the ICA, Lease was the head of exhibitions and design at VCU’s Anderson Gallery.

Aimee Joyaux holds an MFA in photography and practices in a variety of materials. Her work has been exhibited in museums across the country, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts and The Art Institute of Chicago. Joyaux received a VMFA Professional Fellowship in 2017. She lives in a renovated cotton warehouse in Petersburg.
