Solo Cello Performance

Paul Rucker is a visual artist, composer, and musician who often combines media, integrating live performance, sound, original compositions and visual art. Rucker’s work Storm in the Time of Shelter appeared in the inaugural “Declaration” show at the ICA, and was recently acquired by the VMFA. Rucker is currently an iCubed Arts Fellow and Assistant Professor at VCU. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Creative Capital Grant, and is a 2018 TED Fellow.

For his Provocations performances, he will present three concerts, including the world premiere of 400: The Fire Next Time, an original cello performance inspired by the James Baldwin book of the same title, and the 400 year anniversary of the first 19 black bodies brought to Virginia.

  • Friday at 4 pm: Rucker will perform a cellotation (cello and meditation).
  • Friday at 7 pm: World premiere of 400: The Fire Next Time.
  • Saturday at 3 pm: Improvisations with Nathanael Clark on alto saxophone and Victor Haskins on trumpet.

All performances take place in Gallery 4 as part of Rashid Johnson’s “Monument” installation.
