Provocations Performance: American Wild Ensemble
April 26, 4:00 pm // April 27, 4:00 pm
Environmental Chamber Music
The American Wild Ensemble brings together composer Chris Chandler, Music in the American Wild co-directors Emlyn Johnson and Daniel Ketter, VCU music professor Tiffany Valvo, and four VCU Music students: Jasmine Harris, Kayla Modlin, Aiyana Pringle and Cameron Shattuck. In response to artist Rashid Johnson’s “Monument” installation, they will present Audubon Sketches, an open duration work that reflects the expansiveness of the outdoor listening experience. Scored for a septet of winds, strings, percussion, and field recordings, the musicians perform on a variety of instruments, some common and some drawn from natural landscapes. The strike of stones and the rustle of branches and leaves combine with field recordings and instrumental textures, creating an experience in between soundscape and composition.
