Mexico City & Zona Maco: Ancient Inspirations on Contemporary Art
February 6-12, 2024

Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis where the echoes of the past find a voice in the present. In the last century alone, the city has nurtured great muralists like Rivera and Siqueiros, welcomed a wave of modern architecture thanks to Luis Barragan, and embraced the artists of the Generacion de la Ruptura like Francisco Toledo and Lilia Carrillo who focused on abstraction.

Today, Mexico City’s embrace of contemporary art encourages experimentation and the unexpected. The city’s art scene has exploded, and artists and art-lovers come to Mexico City every February to attend Art Week Mexico City, when the city becomes the center of the art world. Launched in 2002 and billed as the largest art fair in Latin America, Zona Maco features more than 200 galleries. The success of Zona Maco has resulted in the recent creation of the Material Art Fair, which focuses on younger, less established galleries, and the edgy Salon Acme, which supports emerging artists.

On this trip to Mexico City with the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU, enjoy VIP access to Zona Maco, be invited into private homes and studios of local artists, visit some of Mexico City’s most influential art galleries and iconic art sites, and delight in the city’s dining, shopping and culture, infused by abundant energy and creativity.
