Performance: Nyugen Smith + Ezrakh

If you missed the festivities at the July opening of Ibrahim Ahmed’s exhibition It Will Always Come Back To You, artists Nyugen Smith and Ezrakh will return to the ICA on September 10 for encore performances in response to Ahmed’s work.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Nyugen Smith is a first-generation Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist. Through performance, found object sculpture, mixed media drawing, painting, video, photo and writing, Nyugen deepens his knowledge of historical and present-day conditions of Black African descendants in the diaspora. Trauma, spiritual practices, language, violence, memory, architecture, landscape and climate change are primary concerns in his practice.

Ezrakh is a musician, songwriter, producer, and co-founder of New Jersey-based record label Thread Imprint. He draws inspiration from the soulful and psychedelic sounds of his upbringing, mixing rock, R&B, electronic, and world music to create a style all his own. In 2020 he released his latest album Infinity: Sankopha & 87, featuring cover art direction by Ibrahim Ahmed. He will be presenting a sound piece, created in collaboration with musician Jesse Herdman, in response to  Ahmed’s installation South x South.

Jesse Lee Herdman is a multidisciplinary artist living on occupied Lenape land where he tends a garden, ferments vegetables, and brews beer. He has toured the U.S. and self-released three studio albums with his band Accidental Seabirds. Herdman breeds tarantulas and works as a curator/designer at Insectropolis, an insect zoo and museum on the Jersey Shore.
