Gospel music from Richmond’s historic First African Baptist Church
Founded in 1841, the historic First African Baptist Church has been a center of cultural and spiritual life in Richmond for over 150 years. Under the leadership of Michelle Lightfoot, the 25+ member Contemporary Choir has performed at 2nd Street Festival, The Maggie Walker Museum, Brown’s Island, and many other venues. They captivated audiences at their opening week performances for Rashid Johnson’s “Monument”. For their encore appearances over Martin Luther King weekend, the First African Baptist Church Contemporary Choir will be performing a repertoire of songs important to the Civil Rights movement.
